I’m going to be busy on Xmas Day

AlanDear Friends, the curators’ office Hampton Court this week has felt a bit like a sinking ship as one by one people have come into my room to say, ‘Well, I’m off now for the holidays.  See you next year!’  I’m clinging on to the bitter end myself, having already had my holiday skiing a couple of weeks ago.

But even I won’t be there on Christmas Day.  That’s because I’ll be busy popping up on your screens and airwaves.  (True story: a lovely old chap of my acquaintance once said to me: ‘I phoned you up last night.  Then I realized why you couldn’t answer the phone.  You were in the bath!’  Or at least I was, on his television.)

At 3.10pm on ITV (yes, that’s directly after the Queen’s Speech, tra la la) Alan Titchmarsh is exploring the creatures and history of the garden at Buckingham Palace, and I believe I shall be making an appearance or two to give him a hand.  Here we are dressed up for the Garden Party we attended last summer.  (I couldn’t help laughing at the Tweeter who said that Alan in this picture looks like ‘a butler with a seedy past’.)  (Sorry, Alan.) (Yes, of course you’re right, Alan, it wasn’t funny at all.)

And then at 6.30 on BBC Radio 4, I shall be reading aloud from my teenage diaries, and the very amusing Rufus Hound will be teasing me about how outrageously geeky I was (and indeed am).  I really hope they included the bit where I described my little brother doing the ‘woodpecker dance’ – I know he’s looking forwards to that.

Happy Christmas.  Just one final link: to my seasonally-popular article about dead robins and other Victorian festive cheer.

Lucy, thank you for this heads up: great news that we’ll be seeing and hearing you over Xmas: greatly looking forward to this. By the way – excuse aged ramblings – in the BM’s Ming exhibition there is a 15th century depiction of a giraffe that looks rather like the beastie you drew years ago and you shared with us-obviously the Ming had not heard of copyright!
hoping you have a super, fun and very happy Xmas & that 2015 is a wonderful year for you & yours – healthy, happy and filled with good things.

Happy Christmas to you, Lucy. I hope 2015 is as successful as 2014 has been, or more so..
I am deeply impressed by anyone who is prepared to read aloud their teenage diaries.. surely there must be serious editing involved
